Many troops in the Warhammer game have unique and  unusual abilities and skills. In the game, these abilities and skills are represented by special rules. Any creature may have one or more special rules and, unless otherwise mentioned, the effects from special rules are cumulative. The following list is by no means exhaustive, but it does detail the most common special rules (more can be found in the Warhammer Armies books).

This section introduces such things as mighty wizards, magical spells and sorcerous items into the Warhammer game. In the Warhammer world, magic is a very real force - a force to be both feared and respected. Only beings that possess awesome mental and physical power can even hope to bend the powers of magic to their will. Lesser persons would be consumed in an instant their minds torn apart by unfettered energies and their souls dragged to the darkest underworld by cackling daemons. Even the most accomplished of sorcerers walk a narrow path at the edge of sanity, between ultimate power and eternal damnation. In the Warhammer world, all magic is derived from the same source - the fickle Winds of Magic. From the Realm of Chaos in the north, this magical gale spills across the world bringing with it the power for great good or evil. The potency of the Winds of Magic vary from time to time, waxing and waning as the rent in reality in the north expands and contracts. Wizards must therefore learn to use best what power they can, tapping into the winds to channel its energies into their spells, or disrupting its flow to dispel the incantations of others, Thus, magic is not a sure strategy for any general, for though it can sweep aside whole armies when it is strong, it can just as easily slip through the grip of a caster with no effect.

High Magic

This rulebook includes eight different kinds of magical lore, each of which is represented by six spells making a total of 48 individual spells. Each lore is based upon one of the eight magical traditions of the High Elves whose learning far exceeds that of any other race in the Warhammer world. The Men of the Empire learned their sorcery from High Elf mages and so use the same system as their basis of study - though their knowledge is by no means as great. The sorcery of the other races of the Warhammer world is also based upon one or more of the eight kinds of magic but often includes spells unique to a particular race. The Warhammer Armies books contain further spell lists for specific armies where appropriate.

Magic Items (and Abilities)

Vaul's Forge

The world of Warhammer is rich in magical artefacts and holy relics of great power. Mighty soul-drinking swords, impenetrable suits of amour encrusted with runic powers, ancient tomes of sorcerous knowledge and lost rings of power many a war has been fought for the sole possession of such treasure. The Warhammer Armies books describe in detail the many different kinds of magic items that each army can use. Here we shall examine the magic items that are commonly used by all races. In cases of contradiction, the special rule of a magic item takes precedence over normal game rules. Magic items can be carried by characters and, in some cases, by the standard bearer or champion of a unit of troops. This is indicated in the army list for each army in the appropriate Warhammer Army book. A character can only have one magic item of each type (weapon, armour, etc), unless otherwise indicated. No specific magic item can be carried by more than one model in the army (eg, there cannot be two models equipped with a Sword of Striking in the same army). Scrolls are an exception to this several scrolls of the same type can be carried by the same Wizard or by different Wizards if you wish. Fleeing models cannot use any magic items that are one use only, bound items and similar magic items that require a decision on when to activate their powers. Only magic items whose effects are permanent still work for fleeing models.

Alith Anar receives a 4+ Ward save. In addition, anyone shooting at Alith Anar (and the unit he is with) suffers an additional penalty of -1 on the roll to hit.

Stone of Midnight

If Alith Anar (and any unit he is with) breaks from close combat, any opponents pursuing him must halve the distance they roll (rounding up) for pursuing.

Shadow Crown

The Moonbow has a range of 36". Roll to hit as normal. Resolve a hit from this bow like a single bolt from a Bolt Thrower. Note that Alith Anar may shoot after moving (but not marching) and stand & shoot with the Moonbow as normal. Units of Dark Elves that suffer any casualties from the Moonbow must take a Panic test, exactly as if the unit had suffered 25% casualties.

No armour saves can be taken against wounds caused by the Fangsword of Eltharion. In addition, it grants the wielder + 2 Strength on the turn he charges.

The Fangsword of Eltharion

The Helm of Yvresse adds + 1 to Eltharion's Armour save, for a total Armour save of 4+. In addition while he is alive, Eltharion and Stormwing receive a 5+ Ward save.

This item makes Eltharion a Level 2 High Elf Mage, who can choose any one of the eight Lores of Magic found in the Warhammer rule book.

All hits from the Sword of Teclis wound on a 2+. Armour saves may not be taken against this weapon.

Sword of Teclis

The Moon Staff gives Teclis D3 bonus power/dispel dice in each Magic phase.

Moon Staff of Lileath

Teclis may ignore the effects of the first miscast he makes each turn. The spell is still a failure, but Teclis is able to dissipate the magical energies harmlessly and suffers no ill effects.

War Crown of Saphery

One use only. When the enemy casts a spell, Teclis may read the Scroll of Hoth aloud as he might read a Dispel scroll and with the same effect. In addition, both Teclis and the caster roll a D6; if Teclis scores higher, the spell is removed from the mind of the caster and cannot be used for the rest of the battle.

Once per battle in the Shooting phase, Tyrion may release the power within Sunfang, unleashing a fiery blast of magical power. This is a breath attack with a Strength of 4. Sunfang also increases Tyrion's strength by +3 and inflicts Flaming Attacks.

The Dragon Armour gives Tyrion an Armour save of 1+, and a 4+ Ward save. With the exception of this improved save, the Dragon Armour of Aenarion follows the normal rules for Dragon Armour.

The Heart of Avelorn gives Tyrion Magic Resistance (2). It also gives Tyrion the Regenerate special rule.
